Gregory Glatzer · Software Engineer, Data Scientist

Builder of data-driven products, platforms, and applied data science solutions

Portrait of Gregory Glatzer

I am a software engineer + data scientist specializing in building data-heavy web platforms. I thrive in roles that look to translate cutting edge approaches into user-friendly products.

Areas of Expertise

Product Engineering

I build full-stack products from concept to production with a strong emphasis on speed, usability, and maintainability.

In my work with Eartrainer.io, I built a full stack solution for tracking student assessments, taking into account security of student data and efficiency of teacher grading and assignment creation workflows.

Applied Data Science

I turn complex data into practical, interactive decision tools that scale.

In my research on elephant movement patterns, I applied clustering algorithms to geospatial datasets, identifying key locations and factors that elephant conservationists can use to focus limited resources for maximum impact.

Domain Adaptation

I quickly adapt to new domains by listening and learning from experts and distilling complex concepts down to practical solutions

In my work on Oncoscape, I had to rapidly come up to speed on cancer biology and genomics concepts in order to build a product that met the needs of researchers and clinicians.

Recent Projects

Oncoscape

Lead Engineer / Chief Technology Officer (Stealth Startup)

Oncoscape is a data visualization and analysis platform for cancer research. I led the transition from a monolithic codebase used by one lab at Fred Hutch Cancer Center to a scalable, multi-lab platform used by ~10 labs within the Fred Hutch + University of Washington cancer consortium. Additionally, I was the Chief Technology Officer for the commercialization effort of bringing the core technology of the Oncoscape research platform (dimensionality reduction on Bulk RNA-Seq data) to market as a product for pharmaceutical companies, alongside seasoned Stanford University startup founders. During this process I led the technical roadmap with a team of 3 engineers.

I am co-author on several papers published on the core technology of the Oncoscape platform, which I supported from both a data science and software engineering perspective. Additional papers are actively using the platform for research.

Eartrainer.io

Full Stack Engineer (Consultant)

Eartrainer.io is a web-based music education platform focused on ear training and music theory used by 10+ universities nationwide. I was brought on to expand the existing ear training platform into a more comprehensive solution for online music theory assessments. This included building out teacher and student-facing features for creating, assigning, and grading music theory exercises. Major technical challenges included securely integrating with Learning Management Systems (Canvas, Blackboard, etc.) using the LTI standard, handling payments and subscriptions with Stripe, database design, and efficient rendering of interactive music notation in the browser.

Computational Research (Elephants!)

Data Science Researcher

I conducted computational research on the environmental and spatial factors affecting the movement of elephants in sub-saharan Africa. Using DBSCAN and KMeans clustering algorithms, I developed a data processing pipeline that yields potential "locations of interest" for elephants. This initial work was presented at the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) 13th Scientific Conference in Arusha, Tanzania.

Elephant domain experts in Africa from The Nelson Mandela Institute of Science and Technology (NM-IST) and the Amboseli Trust for Elephants have since used my pipeline to supplement their research, which resulted in follow-up papers that I co-authored.

Podcast Interview

I was interviewed about this research on the "Data Skeptic" podcast, where I discussed the motivation for the project, the data science methods I used, and the real-world impact of the research on elephant conservation efforts in Africa.
